The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public multidisciplinary research organisation in Spain. It collaborates with national and international universities, public RTD organisations, SMEs, companies and other institutions of a scientific/technological nature. It has a staff of more than 13,500 employees, among these about 3,500 are permanent researchers and more than 4,000 are pre-and post-doctoral researchers. The National Centre of Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC) is one of the largest centers of the CSIC organization. It has a total staff close to 600 employees that includes permanent staff researchers, predoctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and administrative staff. The greatest research efforts are focused in the areas of biomedicine, agriculture and environment. The CNB-CSIC offers to the research groups a large set of Research Services and Research Support Services, including Electron Microscopy, Genomics, Biocomputing, Protein Design, Proteomics, Greenhouses, Laboratory Animals, Biological contention laboratories (levels 2 and 3), Computing and Network, Financial, Personnel and Project Management offices. Regarding how the CNB-CSIC profile perfectly matches the task in this proposal, we note that it has a very important and unique “cryoElectronMicroscopy” cluster, with more than seven active groups working in its Department of Structural Biology, covering most areas of research in this field.
