Carsten Sachse is a group leader at EMBL Heidelberg. He was trained as a structural biologist at the University of Jena (Germany). During his PhD, he developed an interest in using cryo-EM and advanced image processing routines to determine the three-dimensional structures of biological helical assemblies together at Brandeis University (Waltham, US). After postdoctoral training at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK), he started his own research group at EMBL Heidelberg (Germany). In order to advance cryo-EM and associated image processing methods to make it a routine tool in structure determination, he has developed software for single-particle based helical reconstruction. His group now determines the three-dimensional structures of multi-protein complexes with a particular focus on autophagy assemblies.
