Diamond Light Source Ltd. is the UK’s national synchrotron radiation source. It currently operates 24 beamlines covering a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines. Integrated with the facility are the membrane protein laboratory (MPL) a unique research and training facility specifically set up and funded by the Wellcome Trust to facilitate the determination of the three-dimensional structures of membrane proteins by X-ray crystallography and the Electron BioImaging Facility (eBIF), a national facility for cryo-electron microscopy for structural molecular and cell biology. Access to this Wellcome Trust, MRC and BBSRC funded facility (Principal Investigator Helen Saibil, Birkbeck College; David Stuart is a co-applicant) is provided through Diamond with the facility run as a beamline. The Facility Director is not yet appointed, but will be primarily involved.
