The University of Oulu (Oulun Yliopsto) is one of the leading Universities of Finland. The University of Oulu has 17,000 students. A substantial percentage of these are international students, especially in the MSc and PhD study programs. Structural biology is one of the focus areas of the University of Oulu, being developed as an intrinsic part of Biocenter Oulu (BCO) and the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (FBMM), as well as in the Strucbiocat infrastructure for fostering the development of structure based biotechnology of the region. The equipment for protein crystallography is state of the art and there is a strong tradition for organising courses and training activities in Finland, for the international research community on protein crystallographic methods (with Biostruct-X) and on biophysical methods on protein-ligand interactions (with EMBO). Rik Wierenga is coordinator of structural biology of BCO in Oulu and coordinator of the Biocenter Finland Structural Biology network.
